How Gamification Works
Why Gamification?
Traditional parental controls are punitive — they block, restrict, and lock down. Children learn to resent the rules and find workarounds. KidMoat takes a different approach: reward good behavior.
By turning screen time management into a game, children are intrinsically motivated to:
- Stay within their screen time limits
- Respect bedtime schedules
- Use educational apps
- Keep their device healthy and permissions intact
The System at a Glance
KidMoat's gamification system has five interlocking components:
Coins
The core currency. Children earn up to 10 coins per day across 7 behavioral categories. Coins accumulate over time and drive level progression.
Badges
Achievement markers for specific milestones. Over 35 badges across 9 categories, ranging from Common to Legendary rarity. Each badge awards bonus coins.
Streaks
Consecutive days of earning at least 2 coins. Longer streaks unlock multipliers that boost future coin earnings, from 1.1x (3 days) up to 2.5x (365 days).
Daily Challenges
Daily goals that provide extra variety and motivation. Complete challenges to earn bonus coins and keep the experience fresh.
Levels
Long-term progression from Level 1 (Starter) to Level 25 (Grandmaster) and beyond via prestige levels. Each level has a unique title and belongs to an era.
How Scoring Works
Every night, KidMoat's end-of-day process evaluates your child's behavior and calculates their coin score. The score is then multiplied by their active streak multiplier. Badges are checked and awarded automatically. The total coins are added to their lifetime balance, which determines their level.
This all happens automatically — neither parent nor child needs to do anything. The child sees their updated score, streak, and any new badges the next morning.
