Modes
Overview
Modes are temporary screen time sessions that restrict the child's device to a specific set of apps. Use them for homework time, exam prep, family dinner, or any situation where you want to limit distractions.
Built-In Modes
KidMoat comes with two pre-configured modes:
Homework Mode
- Allowed apps: Calculator, Google Docs, Google Classroom, Khan Academy, and other educational apps
- Duration: Set by the parent (e.g., 1 hour)
- What happens: Only allowed apps are accessible. All other apps are locked.
Exam Mode
- Allowed apps: None (full lockdown except phone and emergency)
- Duration: Set by the parent
- What happens: The device is locked to a minimal state. No apps, no browsing.
Creating Custom Modes
- From the parent dashboard, go to Modes > Create Mode
- Name your mode (e.g., "Reading Time", "Sports Practice")
- Select which apps are allowed during this mode
- Set a default duration (can be overridden when activating)
- Save the mode
Activating a Mode
From the Parent Device
- Open the child's profile in the dashboard
- Tap "Start Mode"
- Choose the mode and set the duration
- The child device will switch to the restricted state immediately
Automatic Expiration
- Modes automatically end when the timer expires
- The event is logged as
mode_expiredin the child's activity log - The child's device returns to normal rules
Early Cancellation
- The parent can cancel an active mode from the dashboard at any time
- The child cannot cancel or override an active mode
Gamification
Mode compliance directly affects your child's daily coin score:
- Completing a mode session without violations: 1 coin (Mode Compliance category)
- Any mode violation or tamper attempt: 0 coins for the day
Consistent mode compliance unlocks badges:
- Mode Rookie: Complete 5 mode sessions
- Focus Master: Complete 25 mode sessions
- Discipline King: Complete 100 mode sessions
- Homework Hero: Accumulate 10 hours in Homework Mode
