The Problem Every Parent Knows

If you have a child between 6 and 16, you already know the struggle. The phone is always in their hand. Homework gets delayed. Bedtime becomes a negotiation. And the guilt of taking the device away feels just as bad as the worry of leaving it.

Research from the American Academy of Pediatrics shows that children aged 8 to 12 spend an average of 4 to 6 hours per day on screens, and teens can exceed 9 hours. That does not include schoolwork. These numbers have been climbing year over year, and parents feel increasingly powerless.

Why Existing Solutions Fall Short

Most parental control apps take the same approach: block, restrict, lock down. They turn parents into the "screen time police" and children into adversaries trying to work around the rules. The result is constant conflict and resentment.

We talked to hundreds of parents before building KidMoat. The pattern was clear:

  • Rigid limits create power struggles. A hard cutoff at 2 hours does not teach self-regulation.
  • Kids feel surveilled, not supported. When the app is purely punitive, children associate it with distrust.
  • Parents get alert fatigue. Notifications about every app install or website visit become noise.
  • No positive reinforcement. Current tools only punish bad behavior. They never reward good choices.

A Different Approach: Gamification Meets Parental Controls

KidMoat is built on a simple insight: kids are motivated by games. Instead of only restricting screen time, we reward healthy digital habits with coins, badges, streaks, and levels.

Here is how it works:

Daily Coin Scoring

Every day, KidMoat scores your child across 7 categories of digital behavior:

  1. Screen Time — Staying within daily limits (up to 3 coins)
  2. Bedtime — No device use during sleep hours (up to 2 coins)
  3. Mode Compliance — Completing homework and exam mode sessions (up to 1 coin)
  4. Safe Browsing — No attempts to access blocked content (up to 1 coin)
  5. App Mix — Spending time on educational apps (up to 1 coin)
  6. Location Trust — Staying within safe zones (up to 1 coin)
  7. Device Health — Keeping all permissions enabled (up to 1 coin)

A child can earn up to 10 coins per day. Over time, these coins accumulate to unlock new levels, from Starter all the way to Grandmaster.

Streaks and Multipliers

Consistency is where the real magic happens. When a child earns at least 2 coins per day, their streak grows. Longer streaks unlock multipliers that boost future coin earnings:

  • 3 days: 1.1x multiplier
  • 7 days: 1.25x
  • 14 days: 1.35x
  • 30 days: 1.5x
  • 100 days: 2.0x
  • 365 days: 2.5x

Streak shields protect against the occasional bad day, and broken streaks can be repaired — because we believe in second chances.

Badges and Achievements

With over 35 badges across categories like Screen Time, Bedtime, Browsing, and Streaks, there is always something new to work toward. Badges range from Common (Time Keeper for 7 days under limit) to Legendary (Streak Legend for a 365-day streak).

All the Controls You Expect

Gamification is what makes KidMoat different, but the fundamentals are solid:

  • Screen time limits — Daily limits, per-app limits, and bedtime schedules
  • Location tracking — Real-time GPS, safe zone geofences, and location timeline
  • Web filtering — Content category filters, SafeSearch enforcement, and custom block/allow lists
  • Smart alerts — Tamper detection, app purchase alerts, and offline warnings
  • Modes — Create focused sessions like Homework Mode or Exam Mode with custom app allowlists
