How Can I Block Games During Study Hours Without Taking the Phone Away?

KidMoat4 min read

You can, and it is the right instinct — the phone is where the homework arrives, so removing it removes the work with the distraction.

The setup is four decisions: pick the study window, block games inside that window only, leave open the two or three apps the work genuinely needs, and make the whole thing one switch so you can turn it off when the evening is over.

Start with the window, not the apps

Pick the hours, and pick real ones. "After school until dinner" fails because nobody knows when that is. "5pm to 7pm on weekdays" works because both of you can check it.

Two hours of protected time is worth more than five hours of rules that get abandoned by Wednesday. Start narrow and extend it if it holds.

Block games inside the window only

Not all day, and this matters more than it sounds. A permanent games ban makes the phone something to be smuggled around, and the games move to a friend's handset where you cannot see them at all. Games at 8pm are not the problem; games at 5:30pm instead of maths is.

Blocking by category rather than by name is worth the extra minute. New games appear constantly and a list you maintain by hand is a list that is out of date by next week — which is exactly what happens with sites like Unblocked Games 76.

Keep what the work actually needs

Usually three things: the class messaging group, a browser, and one video app.

The video app is the difficult one, because it is genuinely needed for revision and is also where the two hours go. Blocking it removes a real study tool; leaving it alone changes nothing.

The answer is a timer rather than a block — forty minutes of video, then it closes, with the rest of the phone unaffected. Not every app can do this; check before you rely on it, because per-app time limits are missing from more products than you would expect. Here is the fuller version of the YouTube problem.

Make it one switch

This is the part that decides whether the plan is still running in a month.

If turning study hours on means editing eight apps individually, you will do it once and never reverse it — and stale rules get ignored by everyone, including you.

KidMoat has six ready-made day types — Normal, Weekend, Holiday, Exam Day, Sick Day, Screen-Free Day. Each carries its own daily limit, its own list of apps that stay open, and its own wind-down time. Tap one and everything moves together; tap back and it all returns. During exams that is the difference between a plan you actually use and a folder of settings you are afraid to touch.

Get them to agree to it

A limit imposed on a teenager is a puzzle to solve. A limit they helped set is a deal, and deals survive.

Ask what they think a fair study window is. The number is usually close to yours, and it is theirs, which is most of the battle. Concede something real in exchange — the full limit back at the weekend, or the window ending earlier on a Friday.

Then give it a payoff. In KidMoat a child earns coins on any day they stay inside the agreed limit and spends them on rewards you choose — never on more screen time, which would defeat the point. A child banking towards something is a child who stops testing the boundary every evening.

Three things not to do

Do not block the messaging app the class group is on. You will be undone by the first piece of homework that arrives there, and rightly.

Do not rely on remembering. You will be tired at 9pm too. Automate the window, including the wind-down.

Do not read their messages to check whether they are working. It buys almost nothing and costs the thing that actually protects a teenager, which is that they tell you when something is wrong. KidMoat does not read messages or call logs, deliberately.

Two things worth knowing: KidMoat is Android for now, parent and child both; and a determined child can uninstall it — you are told the moment protection is switched off.
